You have had your driveway cleaned, it looks fantastic, and within a few months small green shoots start appearing between the blocks again. It is one of the most frustrating experiences for homeowners, and it is one of the most common reasons people ask us about driveway sealing.

So, does driveway sealing prevent weeds? The short answer is that a properly applied sealer greatly reduces weed growth, especially on block paving, but no sealer makes a driveway completely weed proof forever. The difference between a driveway that stays clean for years and one that turns green again by next summer usually comes down to how the work is done, not just whether a sealer is used.

In this guide, we explain where driveway weeds really come from, how sealing helps, what it cannot do, and the method we use on driveways across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London.

Where Do Driveway Weeds Actually Come From?

Most people assume weeds push up from the soil beneath the driveway. On a well-built block paved driveway, that is rarely the case. There is usually a compacted sub-base and a layer of sharp sand under the blocks, which most weed roots struggle to grow through from below.

Instead, the vast majority of driveway weeds grow from the top down. Here is how it happens:

  1. Joint sand washes or blows away. Rain, sweeping, car tyres and especially pressure washing gradually remove the fine sand from between the blocks.
  2. The gaps fill with debris. Dust, soil, leaf litter and grit settle into the empty joints, creating a thin layer of growing material.
  3. Seeds land and germinate. Wind, birds and passing traffic drop seeds into those joints. With moisture and a little organic matter, they sprout quickly.
  4. Roots spread through the joints. Once established, weeds and moss widen the gaps, trap more debris and make the problem worse each year.

Ants make things worse by digging out the joint sand to build nests, leaving loose piles of sand on the surface and more empty space for seeds.

We go into this in more detail why weeds keep coming back after a driveway is cleaned.

How Driveway Sealing Helps Stop Weeds

The key to understanding sealing is to know what it does to the joints, not just the surface of the blocks.

It locks the joint sand in place

After cleaning, we refill the joints with kiln dried sand. A quality joint stabilising sealer then soaks into that sand and binds the grains together as it cures, creating a firm, hardened joint. Seeds that land on top struggle to find anywhere to root, and the sand cannot be washed out by rain or swept away.

It reduces space for debris to collect

With full, firm joints, there is far less room for soil and organic matter to build up. Without that growing material, seeds have very little to survive on.

It discourages ants

Bound sand is much harder for ants to excavate, so you see far fewer ant nests and sand piles. That keeps the joints intact for longer.

It makes the driveway easier to keep clean

A sealed surface absorbs less water and dirt. Leaves and debris sweep away more easily, moss and algae find it harder to take hold, and oil spills are less likely to soak in and stain.

It protects the colour and finish

Sealing also helps protect block paving against fading and staining, and can enhance the colour of the blocks, giving the whole driveway a refreshed look.

Does Sealing Prevent Weeds on Every Type of Driveway?

Driveway type Does sealing help with weeds? What we recommend
Block paving Yes, significantly, because the sealer binds the joint sand Clean, biocide, resand with kiln dried sand, then seal
Tarmac Partly. It helps seal surface pores and fine cracks, but weeds mainly appear at edges and larger cracks Clean, treat edges, repair cracks, then consider tarmac painting to restore and protect
Concrete and imprinted concrete Partly. It protects the surface, but weeds grow in cracks and expansion joints Clean, treat joints and cracks, then seal
Natural stone setts Yes, when the jointing is sound Clean, repoint or resand, then seal with a suitable product
Gravel No Use a weed membrane beneath and regular treatment
Resin bound Rarely needed, as the surface is generally weed resistant Regular sweeping and occasional cleaning, especially in shade

Our Method for a Weed Resistant Driveway

At A&R Roof & Hard Surface Cleaning & Restoration, we treat sealing as the final stage of a complete process. Skipping any step shortens the life of the result.

  1. Survey – We check the driveway type, the condition of the joints, any sunken or broken blocks, drainage and staining. This tells us whether the driveway is suitable for sealing.
  2. Deep clean – Our driveway cleaning service uses professional rotary surface cleaners to remove dirt, moss, algae and weeds, along with the old, contaminated joint sand.
  3. Biocide treatment – A professional biocide is applied to kill remaining weed roots, moss and algae spores in the joints and pores of the blocks.
  4. Drying time – The driveway must be completely dry before the next stage. Sand and sealer will not perform properly on a damp surface.
  5. Resanding with kiln dried sand – We brush fine, dry kiln dried sand deep into every joint so they are fully packed.
  6. Sealing – Through our driveway sealing service we apply a quality joint stabilising sealer. It soaks into the sand to lock the joints and protects the surface of the blocks. We work with Smartseal products, which are well established in the UK cleaning and sealing industry.
  7. Curing – The sealer needs time to cure before it can take foot traffic and vehicles. We will tell you exactly how long to keep cars off, which usually depends on the weather and the product used.

Is Driveway Sealing Worth It?

If you have block paving and you are tired of weeds, moss and ant hills returning every year, sealing is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make in your driveway. A cleaned, resanded and sealed driveway stays tidier for longer, needs less maintenance, resists stains and keeps its colour.

It is also a far more affordable option than replacing a driveway that looks tired. In many cases the blocks themselves are perfectly sound, and a full clean and seal brings them back to a condition many customers say looks almost new. As one of our customers in Luton put it after we revived her neglected block paving, it felt like having a brand new driveway without the cost of one.
