Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Clean Your Gutters Before Winter
Every autumn, the same thing happens across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London. The trees turn, the wind picks up, and within a few weeks our phones fill with calls from homeowners whose gutters are overflowing in the first heavy downpour of the season. By the time the water is pouring down the front of the house, the damage has often already started.
If you only clean your gutters once a year, late autumn is the time to do it. It is the point where the year’s debris has finally landed, and just before the wettest, coldest months put your gutters under the most pressure. In this guide we explain why autumn timing matters so much, when exactly to book, and what a proper pre winter gutter clean should include.
The Quick Answer
Late autumn is the best time to clean your gutters because most leaves, seeds and roof moss have fallen by then, and the gutters are about to face the heaviest rain, strongest winds and freezing temperatures of the year. Clearing them once the bulk of the leaves are down, usually from mid November to early December in our area, means water can drain freely all winter, reducing the risk of overflowing, damp walls, rotten fascias, frozen downpipes and sagging gutters. Homes surrounded by trees often benefit from a second clean in spring.
What Ends Up in Your Gutters by Autumn
Gutters fill up gradually through the year, but autumn is when everything comes together.
- Falling leaves. Most UK trees drop their leaves between October and late November. Even a single tree in your garden or your neighbour’s can fill a gutter in a few windy days.
- Seeds and helicopters. Sycamore seeds, conkers, acorns and pine needles add bulk and bind leaves together into a dense mat.
- Roof moss. Moss on your roof dries out over the summer and is then washed or blown into the gutters by the first autumn storms.
- Tile grit and silt. Older concrete tiles shed fine grit that settles at the bottom of the gutter and turns into sludge once it gets wet.
- Twigs and storm debris. Autumn winds bring down small branches and other debris that can block downpipe outlets completely.
- Old bird nests. Nesting season is over, so any nests left in gutters or downpipes can be removed without disturbing active birds.
Clean too early, and much of this has not landed yet. Clean too late, and it has already been sitting in wet gutters for weeks.
Why Autumn Timing Matters So Much
Winter brings the heaviest rainfall
In much of England, the late autumn and winter months are among the wettest of the year, with long spells of rain and frequent storms. A typical roof sheds more than a thousand litres of water during a single heavy downpour, and all of it needs a clear route away from your walls. Gutters packed with wet leaves simply cannot cope.
Wet leaves turn into a heavy, solid blockage
Dry leaves can sometimes wash through a gutter. Once they are soaked by autumn rain, they collapse into a dense, heavy layer of sludge that sits firmly in the gutter and around the downpipe outlet. The longer it stays there, the harder it is to shift and the more weight the brackets have to carry.
Freezing weather makes blockages worse
When a blocked gutter holds water and the temperature drops below freezing, that water turns to ice. Ice expands, adds weight and can crack plastic guttering, split joints and pull brackets away from the fascia. Frozen water in a blocked downpipe can also split the pipe itself. Icicles hanging from your gutters on a cold morning are often a sign that water is not draining as it should.
Overflowing water damages walls and fascias
Water that cannot get away spills over the gutter and runs down the face of the house. Through the wet winter months, this can soak brickwork and lead to damp patches inside, green staining on walls, rotting fascias and soffits, and frost damage to bricks as saturated masonry freezes and thaws.
Problems are easier to fix before winter
Leaking joints, loose brackets, sagging runs and cracked gutter sections are all much easier to spot on a clean gutter. Finding them in autumn gives you time to arrange repairs before the worst weather arrives, rather than discovering them during a storm.

When Exactly Should You Book?
The ideal moment is once most of the leaves near your home have fallen. In our area, that is usually from mid November into early December, although it varies each year with the weather and the types of trees around you.
A few simple rules help:
- Look at the trees. If the trees nearest your roof are mostly bare, it is a good time to book.
- Book ahead. Late autumn is our busiest time for gutter work, so booking a few weeks in advance gives you more choice of dates.
- Consider two cleans if you are surrounded by trees. Homes close to woodland or large trees often benefit from one clean in early autumn and another once the last leaves have dropped, or a late autumn clean followed by a spring clean.
- Do not wait for the first overflow. By the time water is spilling over the gutter, the blockage is already heavy and the walls have started to get wet.
Why Combine Gutter Cleaning With Roof Moss Removal?
If your roof has a lot of moss, cleaning the gutters on their own only solves part of the problem. Every storm will wash more moss off the roof and straight back into the gutters.
Removing the moss from the roof deals with the source of the blockage. That is why gutter vacuuming is included in every one of our roof cleaning packages, and our Silver and Gold packages also include a full gutter clean. Autumn and winter roof cleaning is perfectly possible, with work only postponed for a day or two in heavy rain, frost or snow. You can find out more on our roof moss removal page.
Your Pre Winter Gutter Checklist
A proper autumn gutter clean should cover more than just scooping out leaves. Here is what to expect from a professional service.
- A full inspection. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are checked for damage, sagging or leaks.
- Complete debris removal. Leaves, moss, silt and twigs are cleared from every run of guttering, not just the sections that are easy to reach.
- Downpipe check. Water should run freely from the gutter, through the downpipe and into the drain. Blocked outlets and pipes are cleared.
- Valley and roof edge check. Moss and leaves collecting in roof valleys and along the eaves are noted and dealt with where needed.
- Report on any problems. Loose brackets, leaking joints and cracked sections are pointed out so you can arrange repairs.
- Before and after photos. You should be able to see the results, even if your gutters are not visible from the ground.
- A full tidy up. All waste is bagged and removed, leaving paths, patios and driveways clean.
How We Clean Gutters at A&R
Our team uses specialist gutter vacuum equipment, which lets us clear gutters thoroughly while keeping ladder work to a minimum. The vacuum removes leaves, moss and silt along the full length of each gutter, and we check that every downpipe is flowing freely before we leave.
We are fully insured and trained for working at height, and we provide before and after photos so you can see exactly what was removed. You can read more on our gutter cleaning page or compare our roof and gutter options on our packages page.
Are Gutter Guards Worth It?
Gutter guards, such as mesh covers and brush inserts, can reduce how many leaves get into your gutters. They can be helpful for homes surrounded by trees, but they are not maintenance free. Fine debris, seeds, moss and silt can still build up on top of or inside them, and they can make the gutter harder to clean when it does eventually block. If you have guards fitted, they still need checking and clearing regularly, especially in autumn.
Why DIY Gutter Cleaning in Autumn Is Risky
Autumn is one of the most dangerous times of year to clear gutters yourself. Ladders are more likely to slip on wet leaves and damp ground, days are shorter, and cold, windy weather makes working at height harder. Leaning a ladder against plastic guttering can also crack it. Falls from ladders are a common cause of serious injuries at home, and for most two storey properties a professional clean is far safer.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best month to clean gutters in the UK?
For most homes, late November or early December is ideal, once the majority of leaves have fallen. If you have a lot of trees nearby, a second clean in spring is a good idea.
Can gutters be cleaned in winter?
Yes. Gutter cleaning can be carried out on dry winter days. The advantage of cleaning in late autumn is that water drains freely before the worst of the rain, frost and ice arrives.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least once a year for most homes. Properties near trees or with mossy roofs usually benefit from cleaning twice a year, in late autumn and spring.
What happens if I do not clean my gutters before winter?
Blocked gutters can overflow, soaking walls and leading to damp inside the house, rotten fascias and frost damage to brickwork. Trapped water can also freeze, cracking gutters and splitting downpipes.
Do you clean gutters after roof cleaning?
Yes. Gutter vacuuming is included in all of our roof cleaning packages, and our Silver and Gold packages also include a full gutter clean.
How long does gutter cleaning take?
Most homes are completed in an hour or two, depending on the length of the guttering, how blocked it is and how easy it is to access.
